How to Scrapbook: A Simple, Stress-Free Step-by-Step Guide

How to Scrapbook: A Simple, Stress-Free Step-by-Step Guide

If you’ve ever wanted to scrapbook but felt overwhelmed by where to begin, you’re not alone. Most people don’t struggle with creativity — they struggle with not knowing what they actually need and what to do first.

This guide was created to make scrapbooking feel simple, calm, and achievable. Think of it as a gentle checklist you can follow — or completely ignore — as you create pages that tell your story, one memory at a time.

And just so you know from the start: there is no wrong way to scrapbook.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you even think about photos or layouts, take a few minutes to gather your basic supplies. Having everything within reach makes scrapbooking feel easier and more enjoyable.

Must-Have Scrapbooking Tools

These are the essentials — you truly don’t need more than this to get started:

  • Scissors: I absolutely love the Creative Memories micro-tip scissors. They are perfect for scrapbooking!
  • Archival-safe adhesive: The Creative Memories Repositionable Tape Runner is perfect if you are like me, and want to be able to move your layout if it isn't just how you want it! I change my mind too often, so this is a must for me! Even though it is repositionable, it stays in place until you move it, (unlike cheap tape runners or glue sticks). I put too much work into my pages to settle for anything that doesn't stand the rest of time!
  • Markers: I can't live without the Creative Memories dual-tipped, archival safe markers. They are perfect for journaling and telling the stories behind the photos!
  • Albums: You need somewhere to store and protect your pages. In all my 30+ years of scrapbooking, I've never found a better album than the Creative Memories line of albums. I love the way they come in three sizes, lay flat, can be arranged in whatever order you'd like, and the best part - they have a lifetime guarantee!

That’s it. If you have these two tools you’re ready to get started!

Nice-to-Have Tools (Not Required)

These tools can make things faster or more precise, but they are absolutely optional:

If you have them, great. If you don’t, you can still create beautiful pages without them.

Step 2: Start with Your Scrapbooking Kit

Next, open your Memory Collective Scrapbooking Club kit.

This is where the magic (the calm kind 😉) happens. Your kit is intentionally curated with coordinating papers, embellishments, and inspiration so the hardest decisions are already made for you. Before adding anything else, take a moment to:

  • Look through everything included
  • Notice the colors and patterns
  • Get a feel for the mood of the kit
  • Let the kit guide you first.

Step 3: Not a New Scrapper? Shop Your Stash!

Once you’ve explored the kit, then shop your stash.

Pull out any scrapbook supplies you already own that coordinate with this month’s colors or theme. This might include:

  • Cardstock
  • Stickers
  • Alphabets
  • Embellishments

Shopping your stash after opening the kit keeps things from feeling overwhelming and helps you use what you already love.

Step 4: Select Your Photos

Now it’s time to choose your photos.

  • Look through your camera roll from this month of last year and select 8–12 photos that feel like a good fit for this month’s kit. These don’t need to be perfect photos — everyday moments are often the most meaningful.
  • If you’re unsure what to choose, refer to the photo ideas on the back page of your kit for inspiration.

Step 5: Print Your Photos

Once you’ve chosen your photos, print them using a service you love.

I highly recommend:

Printing your photos is a powerful step — it turns moments from your phone into memories you can hold.

Step 6: Select Your Paper

Now it is time to decide:

  • Which paper will be your background
  • Which papers will go behind your photos
  • Which papers you’ll use for layering or accents

You don’t need to use every paper in the kit. Choose what feels right to you.

Step 7: Choose a Layout

You can:

  • Use one of the included kit layout ideas
  • Use them as inspiration for an idea of your own
  • Or create your own layout from scratch

Layouts are meant to support you — not limit you.

Step 8: Crop & Mat Your Photos

  • Trim your photos as needed
  • Cut cardstock or patterned paper just larger than the photo & adhere behind it

This helps the photo stand out, especially on busy backgrounds. This step adds dimension, but it’s optional.

Step 9: Build Your Page

  • Arrange your photos on the background paper until it feels balanced and pleasing to you. Move things around, try different placements, and take your time.
  • When it feels good, it’s good.

Step 10: Tell Your Story

  • Handwrite the story of your page — names, dates, little details, and feelings. Even if you don’t love your handwriting, your words are the most meaningful part of the page. Your loved ones hear your voice when they read your handwriting.
  • Always include names, dates, and places so that future generations can get to know you better.

Use the scrapbook kit journaling prompts if you need help getting started.

Step 11: Embellish

  • Add stickers, die cuts, borders, or accents to finish your page. If it feels done, it is done!

Step 12: Protect & Place

  • Slide your finished pages into archival-safe page protectors and place them into your album so they’re protected and ready to enjoy for years to come.

Or… Ignore All the Steps

Create freely.
Skip steps.
Make it yours.

There is no wrong way to scrapbook.

The goal is not to catch up — it’s to enjoy the journey.

Happy Scrapping!
